N, a successful lawyer with over 15 years of experience at a law firm, began to feel demotivated and stuck in her career. Relocating to Singapore presented her with an opportunity to re-evaluate her professional direction. After consulting with several career coaches, who predominantly suggested staying within the legal field or transitioning from an external firm to an in-house role, N sought a different perspective. She was looking for guidance on exploring alternative career possibilities beyond the conventional paths. We welcomed the challenge to help N discover new opportunities and broaden her career horizons.
Defining "Happy Monday"
We started by clarifying N’s concept of a "Happy Monday," focusing on her priorities, interests, motivations, and key skills. This foundational understanding went beyond her job title, providing a critical basis for effective career coaching.
Reassuring and Expanding Horizons
One of our initial goals was to reassure N that fulfilling opportunities existed outside the legal field. When she first came to us, she felt demotivated and almost hopeless, fearing she might be trapped in law forever. We worked to shift this mindset, instilling confidence that a rewarding career outside of law was indeed achievable.
Identifying Strengths and Opportunities:
Through our discussions, we identified N’s main strengths: her commercial mindset and exceptional negotiation abilities—skills highly valued across various functions and industries. Leveraging her legal background and these strengths, we brainstormed potential career paths, evaluating them based on her interest, readiness, market availability, and growth potential. We suggested exploring investor relationship management as a compelling alternative. Given her strategic thinking, commercial insight, and strong skills in negotiation, risk management, and problem-solving, we believe she would excel in this role.
Validation
To further validate this new direction, we connected N with members of the THMC community who had experience in investor relationship management. This networking provided valuable insights and affirmed her readiness for the role.
Branding and Storytelling
With a clear career path in sight and recognizing Singapore's burgeoning start-up ecosystem, we focused on refining N’s personal brand. We worked on articulating how her legal expertise could transfer to investor relationship management and polished her narrative to effectively communicate her motivation for this career transition.
N’s journey underscores the importance of not settling for conventional advice or limiting beliefs about career paths. Partnering with a coach who genuinely understands you and the market can reveal opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked. N’s success highlights how transferable skills, when effectively branded and communicated, can open doors to new and exciting roles beyond traditional expectations.
